TUESDAY NOVEMBER 6
Shane Koyczan
Born in Yellowknife Northwest Territories, Shane Koyczan now lives in
Vancouver BC where he is the provincial spoken word champion. He has
received the Leonard Cohen Award for Best Song and the W.B.Yeats Award for
Best Poem. He has won the CBC National Poetry Face Off and the Edinburgh
Book Festival Best Poetry Reading Award. He was the first non-American to
win the Individual Championship title at the National Poetry Slam in 2000.
He has performed with Quincy Troupe and Maya Angelou.
Bob Snider
Bob Snider is a songpoet who was born and raised in Toronto. He lived in
Nova Scotia for many years and now resides again in Toronto. He has
produced 6 CDs including: Poetreason and Words and Pictures. He has been
nominated for a Juno Award and has featured on CBC. His most recent book
is On Songwriting (Gaspereau Press).
Susan McCaslin
Susan McCaslin has published ten volumes of poetry. The most recent book
is, Lifting the Stone (Seraphim Editions, 2007). In 2006 she won the
Federation of BC Writers' Poetry Contest. Her poems have appeared three
times on the buses in Vancouver's Poetry in Transit program. Currently she
is on the editorial boards of Event and The Journal of Feminist Studies in
Religion (Harvard Divinity School). She teaches English at Douglas College
in New Westminster BC.
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 13
Steve McCabe
Steve McCabe is a poet and multidisciplinary artist originally from the
American middle-west, now living in Toronto. He has exhibited works on
canvas, paintings on paper, collaborative artworks, mixed media sculpture,
and video. He will be celebrating his fourth book of poetry, Hierarchy of
Loss (Ekstasis Editions).
Karen Mulhallen
Karen Mulhallen is the editor of the award winning literary journal,
Descant. She has published more than a dozen books including anthologies,
criticism, and poetry. She will be celebrating her new book of poetry, Sea
Horses (Black Moss Press) which is based on her time on Sable Island, Nova
Scotia, a sandbar in the high Atlantic which is home to a herd of wild
horses.
Andrea Thompson
Andrea Thompson is a poet and spoken word artist, currently living in
Toronto. In 2005 she received a nomination for the Canadian Urban Music
Award - Spoken Word Category. She has performed in numerous festivals
including Scream in High Park, Seattle Poetry Festival, and Vancouver
International Spoken Word Festival. She is the author of Eating the Seed
(Ekstasis Editions), and host of Heart of a Poet (season 2) currently
airing on Bravo TV www.heartofapoet.ca
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 20
Brendan McLeod
As a spoken word artist Brendan McLeod has been Vancouver's Grand Slam
Poetry Champion (2005) and the Canadian Slam Poetry Champion (2004) and
finished 2nd at the 2004 World Slam Championships, held in Holland. His
video/audio can be found at www.brendanmcleod.ca. He holds an MA in
Philosophy from the University of Waterloo and currently lives in
Vancouver.
Sue Chenette
Sue Chenette is a poet and pianist who grew up in Wisconsin and has lived
in Canada since 1972. Her chapbook, The Time Between Us, won the 2001
Shaunt Basmajian Chapbook Award. A second chapbook, A Transport of Grief,
was published in 2007 by LyricalMyrical Press. She will be celebrating her
newest chapbook, Solitude in Cloud and Sun. "I chose the paper, printed,
cropped, and stitched the books by hand, my goal being not just a book of
poems, but a beautiful made object."
Celia Ferrier
Celia Ferrier is an emerging poet who has studied writing at the Banff
Centre, Humber School For Writers, and Ryerson University. Her poetry was
included in Calling Cards: New Poetry from Caribbean/Canadian Women
(Sandberry Press).
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 27
John Steffler
John Steffler is the author of five books of poetry including The Grey
Islands (M&S, 1985; Brick Books, 2000). His poetry awards include the
Atlantic Poetry Prize and the Newfoundland and Labrador Poetry Prize. He
has served as writer-in-residence at Concordia University, Saint Mary's
University, and the University of New Brunswick. Currently he lives in
Montreal. In December 2006, he was named Poet Laureate of Canada.
Paul Vermeersch
Toronto poet, Paul Vermeersch is the author of three poetry collections.
The most recent is, Between the Walls (McClelland & Stewart, 2005). In
June 2007, he was one of six English-language poets chosen to represent
Canadian Poetry at the Berlin Poetry Festival. French and German
translations of his poems will appear in an anthology to be co-published
in Canada and Germany in 2008.
S.E.Venart
S.E.Venart (Sarah) lives in Montreal and will be travelling to Toronto to
promote her first full length book of poetry titled, Woodshedding (Brick
Books). Her poetry has appeared in many journals and she has won This
Magazine's Great Canadian Literary Hunt as well as a CBC-QWF Short Story
Award.
