The Art Bar Poetry Series takes place at
Clinton's, 693 Bloor Street West, right by Christie Subway Station.

(Feel free to drop in around 7:30 for dinner & drinks & mingling!)
Free admission, but we pass the hat for donations.


TUESDAY MARCH 3

10th Annual Art Bar Discovery Night hosted by Nancy Bullis
On Discovery Night, up to 20 poets present their own work and are judged
by audience ballots. Open to anyone who has never featured at the Art Bar
Poetry Series. There are 3 rounds.

RULES:
1) You must sign up yourself
2) Poets are free to work in any style
3) No props, costumes, musical instruments allowed
4) Each poet gets 3 minutes to present one poem
5) Audience members decide by ballot who continues to the next round

Sign-up begins at 7:30pm. Competitors should bring 3 poems, no longer than
3 minutes each. Prize is a feature reading at the Art Bar on Tuesday 14
April 2009.


TUESDAY MARCH 10

Agnes Walsh
Agnes Walsh was born and raised in Placentia, Newfoundland and now lives
in St. John's. She released her first collection of poems, In the Old
Country of My Heart, in 1996. In 2006 she was named the first poet
laureate of Newfoundland and Labrador. In her latest collection, Going
Around With Bachelors (Brick Books), Walsh explores the past in the
present; Ireland and Portugal in Newfoundland; and the Cape Shore.

Ryan Kamstra
Ryan Kamstra is a writer of poems, fiction and songs. His first book, Late
Capitalist Sublime (Insomniac Press) was published in 2002. As a musician
he is known as Scratch Kamstra and his band Tomboyfriend has an album
"don't go to school" due out this year. He will be celebrating his latest
poetry book, Into the Drowned World (Insomniac Press).

Lara Bozabalian
Lara Bozabalian has been writing and performing her poetry for the past
eight years. She is the author of four chapbooks. She was a runner-up in
the 2007 Luminato/City of Toronto Poetry Slam and a semi-finalist for the
2008 Toronto Poetry Slam Team. She founded a Spoken Word Festival for high
school students across York Region and leads teacher workshops in order to
bring and Spoken Word to classrooms. She recently represented Canada at
the Individual World Poetry Slam in Charlotte, North Carolina.


TUESDAY MARCH 17

Linda Frank
Hamilton poet Linda Frank's first collection of poems, Cobalt Moon Embrace
was released in 2002 from BuschekBooks. Her newest book, Kahlo: The World
Split Open (BuschekBooks) is described as a fictional poetic biography of
a strong independent woman, Frida Kahlo.

Tracy Hamon
Tracy Hamon lives in Regina where she is completing an MA in English. Her
first book, This is Not Eden (Thistledown Press) was a finalist for two
Saskatchewan Book Awards. Most recently her manuscript about the Austrian
expressionist painter Egon Schiele was short-listed for the CBC Literary
Awards.

Ross Belot
Ross Belot's first poetry collection, Swimming in the Dark, was recently
published by Black Moss Press. This book was developed under the Banff
Centre's Wired Writing Studio. He is a member of the Hamilton Poetry
Centre executive. Poetry helps him deal with his day job working deep in
the bowels of a multinational oil company.


TUESDAY MARCH 24

Alison Pick
Alison Pick was the winner of the 2002 Bronwen Wallace Award for Poetry,
2003 National Magazine Award for Poetry, and the 2005 CBC Literary Award
for Poetry. Her newest poetry collection is The Dream World (McClelland &
Stewart). Recently her work appeared in the anthology Best Canadian Poetry
in English, 2008 (Tightrope Books). She lives in Toronto.

Marvyne Jenoff
Marvyne Jenoff is a poet and visual artist who lives in Toronto. She is
the author of No Lingering Peace (Fiddlehead Poetry Books), Hollandsong
(Oberon Press) and The Orphan and The Stranger (Wolsak and Wynn). She will
be celebrating her latest book, Crackerjack Umbrella (Twoffish Press).

Spillious
>From Vancouver, the seasoned and celebrated spoken-word artist Spillious
(aka Trevor Spilchen) makes a rare Toronto appearance.


TUESDAY MARCH 31

Dayle Furlong
Dayle Furlong studied English Literature and Fine Arts at York U. Her
poetry and fiction have appeared in Taddle Creek, Kiss Machine, The
Puritan, Word and The Voice. She works as a literary publicist and
screenwriter's assistant. Her debut collection of poetry, Open Slowly
(Tightrope Books) was published in 2008.

Patrick Friesen
Patrick Friesen lives in Vancouver. He has written stage and radio plays
as well as poetry. His books have been shortlisted for the BC Book Prize
and one book, A Broken Bowl (Brick Books) was a finalist for the Governor
General's Award. His most recent poetry book is, Earth's Crude Gravities
(Harbour Publishing).

Elana Wolff
Elana Wolff is the author of three collections of poetry with Guernica
Editions: Birdheart, Mask and You Speak to Me in Trees. The latter was the
winner of the 2008 F.G.Bressani Prize for Poetry. She is also co-author
with the late poet Malca Litovitz of Slow Dancing: Creativity and Illness,
Duologue and Rengas.
